If you connect your banks, Orama receives transactions and balances without files, up to 4 times a day, and uses them together with your invoices to build your cash flow forecast. Norma 43 is still useful to take a statement into another program, but it isn’t the basis of a forecast.

If every week you log in to three or four banks, download the statement in Norma 43, convert it to Excel and paste it into your cash flow spreadsheet, here is what that file gives you, why it falls short for forecasting, what to do with banks that can’t be connected and an example of how much time it saves.

What Norma 43 is and what it’s used for

Norma 43, also known as Cuaderno 43 or CSB43, is the Spanish banks’ standard format for delivering an account’s transaction statement in a text file. Almost every bank offers it in online banking. Because all banks use the same structure, one program can read any bank’s statement without anyone typing in the transactions. The record-by-record detail is in Orama Academy (in Spanish): Norma 43.

Why a Norma 43 statement isn’t enough to forecast cash

A statement is a snapshot of the past: it tells you what came in and went out up to the day you downloaded it. A forecast also needs what is going to happen: invoices pending collection and payment, payroll, taxes, loan and credit line instalments. And it needs every bank’s data up to date, not from the day someone had time to download it.

Norma 43 file

Orama bank connection

Excel in Orama

How transactions arrive

You download it from online banking

Automatically

You upload it

Frequency

Whenever you download it

Up to 4 times a day

Whenever you upload it

What it’s for

Taking the statement into other programs

Connected banks

Unsupported bank, history or petty cash

Manual work

Download, convert and paste for each bank

None; renew the authorisation every 90 or 180 days

Download and upload

How to move from files to a forecast that updates itself

Connect your banks. You authorise the connection once at each bank (PSD2, read-only). Orama connects to 100% of banks in Spain and 3,000+ across Europe and Latin America, and downloads the history each bank allows.

Connect your ERP. Customer and supplier invoices arrive automatically and become expected collections and payments on their due dates.

Let it reconcile. Each transaction is assigned to its item with keyword rules: between 80 and 95% of transactions reconcile on their own, and the rest go to the task inbox.

Review the forecast. With actuals and forecast together, you see your cash 13 weeks and 12, 18 or 24 months ahead, and test scenarios before deciding.

And if a bank can’t be connected

It can happen with a foreign bank, an account where you want more history or petty cash. In those cases transactions are uploaded in Excel to a manual account: an .xlsx file of up to 1 MB with three required columns (transaction date, description and amount), with collections as positive and payments as negative. If your online banking offers the statement in Norma 43 and in Excel, download the Excel file. The step-by-step guide is in Orama Academy (in Spanish): Importing bank transactions.

Those transactions are assigned to their items with the same rules as those from the bank and enter the forecast like any other account.

If your accountant works from the statement

Many Spanish accounting firms ask for the Norma 43 file every month for the books. With your banks connected in Orama, your accountant can have access, with the permissions you decide, to your already reconciled transactions, or receive the data exported from Orama in Excel (or in Norma 43, on request). If your management software is SIS Grupo, Orama sends it the bank transactions. We explain it for firms in Orama for accounting firms.

Example: from 3 hours a week to none

Anonymised example. Talleres Duero, in Burgos, has a turnover of €4M and works with four banks. Every Monday, the office manager downloaded the four statements in Norma 43, converted them to Excel and pasted them into her cash flow spreadsheet: about 3 hours a week, and the forecast was only up to date on Mondays.

After connecting the four banks and the ERP, transactions arrive on their own up to 4 times a day and 90% reconcile without being touched. One Wednesday, the forecast shows that in five weeks the balance will drop to €12,000 because of the extra pay month and a leasing instalment. With that margin, they bring forward the direct debit collection for two customers and reach that week with a cushion. With the files, they would have seen it the following Monday.

If you still keep your cash in a spreadsheet, the 13-week cash flow template is a good starting point. And if you want to see the forecast with your banks connected, try Orama free for 7 days, no card required, or book a 30-minute demo. If your online banking offers the statement in Norma 43 and in Excel, download the Excel file. With the bank connected you don’t need any file.

Do I need Norma 43 if I use Orama?

No. If your bank is connected, Orama downloads transactions and balances without files. You only upload transactions manually for an unsupported bank, to extend the history or for petty cash.

How often are transactions updated?

With the bank connection, up to 4 times a day. With files, whenever someone downloads and uploads them.

Is the bank connection secure?

It’s a read-only PSD2 connection through aggregators regulated by the Bank of Spain and ISO 27001 certified: Orama sees transactions and balances, but can’t move money.

What if the statement’s closing balance doesn’t match the bank’s?

Usually a transaction is missing or the downloaded period is wrong.
